Topic 3 of 5
Specifications and site paperwork
Drawings show where things go. Other documents say what to use, when to do it, and record what's been done.
Before and during the job
| Document | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Specification | The written detail of materials, standards and quality required, such as which make of accessories or type of cable. |
| Programme of work (bar chart) | When each task starts and finishes, and how trades fit together. |
| Job sheet | Tells an operative what work to do, where and for whom. |
| Timesheet | Records the hours worked, for pay and for charging the job. |
| Variation order | Written instruction to change the work from the original contract, such as extra sockets. |
| Daywork sheet | Records labour, materials and plant used on extra work that's charged separately. |
| Purchase order | Orders materials from a supplier. |
| Delivery note | Comes with a delivery. Check the goods against it before you sign. |
Bar charts
A bar chart (Gantt chart) shows each task as a bar along a timeline. It shows which jobs overlap, which must finish before others start, and whether the job is on time.
At handover
- Certificates: such as the Electrical Installation Certificate with its schedules of inspections and test results.
- As-fitted drawings.
- Operation and maintenance (O&M) manual: how to use and look after the installation, with manufacturers' information.
Exam tip: never do extra work just because someone asked on site. Get a variation order first, so it's agreed and paid for.
